Site Director

Valerie Lafferty

Val brings experience across the nonprofit, for-profit, and state government sectors, with academic training in social sciences and law from Michigan State University and Wayne State University. After retirement, she became deeply engaged in environmental and food-systems work through civic and governmental service, leading to practical, community-based initiatives including farmers market gleaning, food-scrap collection, school lunch waste audits, and ultimately food rescue. Today, she helps lead the Food Rescue–Lansing Communities direct-transfer, volunteer-powered model, which has proven to be an effective and reliable solution for feeding people while preventing food waste. Over more than two years, this initiative has strengthened community connections among amazing volunteers, generous food donors, and caring social service agency staff!

Donor Engagement

Julia Haidler

Julia joined FR US - Lansing Communities' volunteer team in fall 2025 to help in her community. Since graduating from MSU in 2022, she has helped lead MSU's Vermicompost Operation to divert food scraps from the landfill. She looks forward to growing as a food system professional and working further 'upstream' in the wasted food scale compared to her day job.
